High Court Restores $4.3 Billion Punitive Award Against Sudan For Embassy Attacks

Mealey's ( May 19, 2020, 11:15 AM EDT) -- WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Supreme Court on May 18 concluded that plaintiffs may seek $4.3 billion in punitive damages against the Republic of Sudan, which supported terrorism attacks against two U.S. embassies in 1998.  The high court vacated a lower court ruling and held that under an amended federal statute, plaintiffs may seek punitive damages for conduct that occurred before the amendment (Monicah Okoba Opati, et al. v.
